Alabama Shakes

Wednesday, February 8, 2012

Every so often a band comes out blazing with raucous, boot-stomping energy that makes you want to shout "Good lawd!" That band is here, and they are called Alabama Shakes.

The southern rock and rootsy soul band deliver energy unlike any other I've seen in recent. As soon as you hear front woman Brittany Howard you know the girl has got it, (and you secretly wish you could be as guitar-wielding cool girl). Comparisons to Janis Joplin, Nina Simone and even The Black Keys abound when trying to describe the magical quality of Brittany. And rightfully so. Anyone wanting solid blues, soul, and country should check them out. You can tell their hearts are on the stage after every live performance, and the energy translates on their recorded material. No cover ups, no drum machines, no pretention or worry about sweating it out on stage. Just raw, solid southern rock. Not to mention a backing by one of the coolest rockers out there: Jack White. In 2011 Jack White invited Alabama Shakes to record a live session at his Third Man Studios.

The band is already signed to ATO Records (founded by Dave Matthews and Michael McDonald), and is venturing out on tour to promote their upcoming album Boys and Girls, which set for an April 2012 release. Check 'em out early because shows are already sold out!
