NYC Event: Bang on a Can Marathon

Wednesday, June 15, 2011

This Sunday, New York City welcomes back its annual Bang On A Can Marathon. For 13 consecutive hours, visitors are treated to over 150 musicians from nearly every continent on one stage. Bang On A Can offers the best and most eclectic mix of contemporary music you're never going to experience on the radio...or in most commercial arenas for that matter. One of the most well-known and well-regarded figures mastering this style of music is legendary composer Steve Reich. Check the video below to watch him at work and to get a taste for what you'll be treated to at this year's show.

Last year I had a chance to attend with my boyfriend at the time, and even though I had no clue about what I going to experience it turned out to be one of the best and rewarding sonic experiences I had had in a while. I ended up finding out about several artists, and one in particular whose work I love: an upright bass player named Florent Ghys.  The musicians present at the marathon definitely operate in the  more avant garde vein of music, but if you have an open mind and ear for wonderful music be sure to check it out. A full line up is available here.

What: Bang On A Can Marathon
When: Sunday, June 19th
Where: World Financial Center Winter Garden, NYC

Thanks to my friend Dave, who sponsored this post :)

  1. Do you mean June 19th? You posted January 19th and that plus "NYC... Winter Garden" is a little confusing.

  2. Good looking out, Ktchp. Changes have been made :) Thanks for stopping through!
