"Brooklyn Keeps On Taking It"

Monday, March 22, 2010

If there was ever an occasion that called for an improper use of the English language, the Menahan Street Band's sound would warrant the use of said offense. So here goes: it just don't make no sense how Brooklyn stays on fire musically. I mean, Brooklyn has practically become the Motown of the Millennium. So many phenomenal soul bands and record labels have solidified a patch of concrete in the large borough and are reaping big time.

The Menahan Street Band is that band you want playing your theme music as you walk down the street, brush your teeth, pop your collar, or do whatever it is you do. It's like "Brooklyn's Best Of" decided to band together and have a constant jam session. Check it: musicians from Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, El Michels Affair, The Budos Band, and Antibalas. All of which have been featured on the Chestnut before (save for Antibalas). The Menahan Street Band even features Charles Bradley, who you'd swear was Otis Redding or David Ruffin of the Temptations. My gushing done, check out some audio for yourself here, and do some more reading about the band over at Wax Poetics.

  1. great post!

  2. Can't go wrong with that line up. Antibalas is the band behind the broadway musical "FELA". I'll be copping this NOW!! Great blog, thx

  3. Thanks for the blog love, Jay and Smalltown!

Jay, I've been meaning to catch FELA! for a minute! Questlove is forever hyping Antibalas as well, so I'd love to be able to check them out in the future.
