Get Put On: Shafiq Husayn

Yo! I'm really really excited to have been put on to Shafiq Husayn, courtesy of OkayPlayer. I've been a huge fan of Sa-Ra, the music collaborative of which he's been a part for years (and featuring Taz Arnold!), so it was cool to start out reading an article about Bilal's new album and then catching a link to Shafiq's latest project of which Bilal is also a part.

En'A Free-Ka, Shafiq's latest album, is the shock treatment that soul music has been inching towards for years. Cosmic soul, which could arguably encompass artists like Me'Shell Ndegeocello (saw the woman with her band live the other night with my guy and she was PHENOMENAL), Bilal, Sa-Ra, Vikter Duplaix, and a few others, has really been underground for a minute. But with forces like the late, great J Dilla and Sa-Ra Creative Partners (even Kanye's hand is all in it), this crazy mix of funk, soul, jazz, hip hop is fused together and released like a million circuits of electricity. It's probably called cosmic soul because the tempo, the beats, the concepts, and the arrangements are so other worldly and alien, yet familiar.

With En'A Free-Ka, you get this wonderful mash-up of what technology and drums really sound like when in the hands of a mix master like Shafiq who's made his entire career from off-kilter, staccato-like beats with a strong groove behind them.

Check Amazon, check iTunes, check the MySpace.
My personal certified bangers from the album:
"The U.N Plan"
"Cheeba" ft. Bilal
"Intro/Electra"
"The Odd is C"
"Love Still Hurts" ft. Stephen Bruner
(this might as well be a tracklist for the album lol)
