Check the Rhyme

Thursday, April 2, 2009

My mind is on such a music overload right now. And I'm diggin it. The extent to which quality beat breakers and innovators of jazz, hip hop, funk, soul, and rock have gone about (re)creating music is a true testament to anyone with raw talent and a drum.

Anyone familiar with Wu-Tang's classic C.R.E.A.M from their debut album Enter the Wu Tang (36 Chambers) can appreciate the homage that El Michels Affair pays to it by keeping the snare hard and clean. But El Michels Affair lifts the rendition to loftier heights by intertwining a new ministry of sound of horns, keys, and a guitar. The band teases us with inflections of Latin jazz, and then offers up a fusion of retro-soul, funk, and hip hop that rubber stamp the technique of producers like Pete Rock, Guru, J Dilla, and DJ Premier.

Check the post below to listen to Mayer Hawthorne, a new goodie that submerges his sound in sweet oldies.
