"Joni Mitchell Never Lied..."

Sunday, July 6, 2008

Mali has arguably become the newest epicenter for photography in the 21st century. Photo tours have been conducted, museums have been erected, prestigious award ceremonies have been held, galleries are opening left, right, and middle, etc.

Celebrated Malian photographer Malick Sidibe quite possibly set the precadent for documentary photography in Mali with his soulful portrayl of the style and energy of 1960s youth culture in Bamako. The added cool factor to discovering Sidibe's images was seeing how they could very well have inspired the video for Janet Jackson's 1997 "Got Til It's Gone". This video would be my ideal subject to photograph as an essay, what with the lighting, energy, and style of the decade in which it looks like it was shot.

Big thank you to Black Kool, from whom this comparison stems.
