Brooklyn on My Mind

Thursday, June 5, 2008

The new issue of N.E.E.T magazine is up! While doing a bit of browsing I came across the Brooklyn-based, Madagascar-inspired handbag designers Mad Imports. Mad Imports is all about recycling and replenishing. Raw materials like the bark from boabab trees are gathered in Kenya and Madagascar and are hand weaved by various women. The bark is then dyed naturally, colored, and styled into cluthes and totes that form a hybrid of traditional and contemporary aesthetics.

What's really great is that Mad Imports is heavily invested in the future of the people who help make their products possible. Their organization funds the education of the weaver's children as well as funds community-based projects initiated by the women of Kenya. Sales from their products work toward helping families establish financial freedom. If you're in or around the Brooklyn area and want to hit up the store, the address is here :

  1. I'll def check them out! Yo, did you name the post Brooklyn On My Mind because of that song by 9th Wonder, featuring Mos Def, Memphis Bleek and that girl (Jean Grae, or something)?
